How Much Room Does a Pool Table Really Need?

Owning a Billiard table at home is every game lover’s dream. However, before choosing the model, the cloth color and finally the size, there is one question that must be answered precisely: «Will it actually fit in my space?»

The most common mistake is calculating only the table’s dimensions, forgetting that the game is played… outside of it. If you don’t want to use shorter cues (which, let’s admit, are not the ideal solution), here’s how to correctly calculate the required space.

Let’s look at the basics:

The Golden Rule: Cue Length

To play without restrictions (optimal conditions), the free space around the table must be at least equal to the length of a standard cue.

Minimum accepted dimensions: The minimum distance from the playfield (inner playing surface) to the nearest wall or piece of furniture should be 150 cm on all sides.

Keep this in mind:

🔹 Standard Cue: Typically 147 cm long (also available in lengths from 90 cm to 130 cm).

🔹 + Cue Movement: Add approximately 5–10 cm for the backward motion of the cue (the so-called backstroke).

🔹 The maximum clearance is necessary when the cue ball is frozen to the cushion and your cue is positioned at a 90 degrees angle to it.

How to Measure Your Space Correctly

Before taking out the measuring tape, keep in mind these “hidden” parameters:

🔹 Protruding furniture: A sideboard, an armchair, or even a wall radiator can obstruct your cue when aiming at a ball frozen to the cushion—unless their height is under 90 cm.

🔹 Lighting height: The light fixture should hang low enough to avoid glare, but high enough so you don’t hit it if you suddenly raise your cue. Rule says that the bottom of the light fixture should be 90–100 cm above the billiard cloth.

🔹 House columns and beams: If there is a column and you are close to it, for example, 1.20 m away instead of 1.50 m, it’s not the end of the world. You’ll rarelly need a shorter cue but for 90% of shots, the space will be sufficient.
