In general there are three different kind of cue tips. The distinguishing mark is the type of material used to produce tips. The first group are tips made of cowhide (Professional, Triangle,...etc.). These tips are single layer and about 7mm thick. The hardness of these tips can differ from soft to medium, depending on the leather type and the production process. The second group are laminated cue tips. These tips are made of pigskin which is about 1mm thick. The tips are produced as a multilayer product, their hardness may vary from soft over medium to hard. Pigskin offers the advantage that it chalks easily and holds the chalk pretty good. The crown of these “built” tips belongs to the original Japanese Moori tips, a top product. All laminated tips offer longer wear and better performance in comparison to tips made of cowhide. The third group of tips are made of synthetic material like phenol and do belong to the hardest tips ever made. Ideal choice for jump-break cues.
All tips are facing similar problems like the so called “swell” or “mushrooming”. Due to the high impact during the break-shot or hard shots during the game, the tips start to deform and look like a small mushroom. The softer the tip is, the more you might be affected by this problem, resulting in decreasing consistency of your shots. Another problem, mostly seen using cowhide tips, is the so called “cementation” . In this process the chalk penetrates the cue tip at the surface. Under the pressure of continuously harder shots the tip tends to harden. Result: the tip will not hold the chalk as it is supposed to, misscueing is a consequence. Laminated cue tips offer lots of advantages against the traditional cowhide tips and are therefore, even more expensive, the first choice of semiprofessionals and pro’s.
